The Pumas:

The U9 Pumas won through tough battles against Rockcliff, Alnwick and Blyth to win the County Plate yesterday. A tight game against Rockcliff resulted in a 4-4 draw with 3 x tries scored Adam and another by James.

Pumas went through on the first try rule and faced perhaps the tightest game of the day against Alnwick Mixed. With the scores set at 0-0 with 30secs to go Alnwick broke through and it was only a last ditch diving tackle from Oliver that saved the Pumas from being knocked out. After a further 7 mins of extra time during which Pumas had all the pressure it was Oliver again who finally made the breakthrough to get the try, causing Damian the coach the show off his David Pleat / Luton Town celebration!

With confidence up, the final against Blyth ended 5-0 to the Pumas with Oliver and James scoring again and Adam adding a further three to his impressive Tally.

The whole team played exceptionally well and were well deserved winners. Pictures and name checks to follow once I work out how to upload photos!

The Panthers:

An injury devastated Panthers team meanwhile started the tourament superbly well with a 7-0 win against Alnwick mixed (scorers: George x 4, Finn x 2, Patrick H x1) and a 5-0 win against Blyth (scorers: George x 2, Finn, Tom, Patrick R) before going down to Northern A [eventual County Cup winners] in their final group game.

Having qualified for the County Cup, further injuries meant that Panthers could only field 5 regular starters in their Quarter final and despite bravely fighting back from 3-0 down to 3-2 eventually went out to Novo's.

A real shame because in the first two games at least Panthers genuinely looked to be one of the best teams there and without the injuries may well have gone all the way.

Blyth and Morpeth Match Reports - 7 Mar 10

Blyth U9s v Morpeth U9s v Percy Park U9s  Sunday 7/3/10

The sun finally made an appearance at one of Percy Park’s U9s fixtures and both the Panthers and Pumas celebrated by putting in some good performances ahead of the County Cup.

The Panthers in particular upped their game from recent weeks with some great passing, determined defence and aggressive running. Their return to their pre-xmas form deservedly resulted in a clean sweep of victories.

The Pumas meanwhile showed that they are really starting to get to grips with the organisational aspects of the game and although the some of the results didn’t quite go their way, the performances were very encouraging and hint that are close to clicking into becoming a very good team.

Game One. Morpeth B  0 - 12  Percy Park Panthers

[scorers: Fin x 4; Patrick H x 3; Joe x 2; George x 2; Adam]

One of the boys best performances of the season by all accounts. Great passing; excellent low tackling and determined forceful running.

Game Two. Blyth 5 - 2  Percy Park Pumas

[scorers: Tom x 2]

The Pumas showed good shape in this game against Blyth’s A team which was far more even that the score hints at. Blyth had some good fast runners that broke through the Pumas line and that was the difference between the sides. A bit more confidence in the tackle will help the Pumas in this respect and that will come with practice.

Game Three. Morpeth A 2 - 7  Percy Park Panthers

[scorers: Patrick R x 2; George x 2; Joe; Jamie; Fin]

Morpeth A looked a good strong side and early on threatened to dint Panthers confidence after scoring the first  try. However, some good aggressive runs soon put the Panthers on the front foot and they never looked back.

(note – I’m not sure I’ve got all the scorers correct for this game so let me know if I’ve missed anyone!)

Game Four. Morpeth A  ? - ?  Percy Park Pumas

[can someone fill me in with the scores and scorers of this one? I heard the pumas put in a good performance but may have lost by a couple]

Game Five. Blyth 2 - 8  Percy Park Panthers

[scorers: George x 3; Fin x 2; Adam, Patrick H, Patrick R]

The Panthers finished the morning with another excellent performance with tries coming from all areas of the pitch. Drives, runs, passing moves, rucks and mauls. No wonder they were smiling!

Game Six. Morpeth B 1 - 4  Percy Park Pumas

[scorers: Daniel; George x 2; Tom]

The Pumas finally got the result they deserved, prompted by an early excellent try from Daniel. They dominated the rest of the match with George scoring a couple of trys either side of half time and Tom finishing off with a flourish.

Overall, a great weekend for the U9s. Both teams are really starting to work as units now, and eight different scorers (six of which got hat-tricks or more) illustrate the strength in depth they have.

Alnwick Match Reports - 7 Feb 10

Reports by: Ian Hay

Game One. Percy Park Panthers 0 - 3 Alnwick

Panthers suffered a very rare defeat at the hands of the current County Cup holders Alnwick.

Although the Panthers put up a brave performance in the appalling conditions, Alnwick showed why they are the County Cup holders with an outstanding performance. They were a fast, well disciplined, free passing and strong tackling team.

Panthers certainly made a contest of the game, with some great tackling, rucking and mauling, but they could not get any passing moves going due to the fantastic blitz defence tactics of Alnwick, who were right in the faces of their opponents as soon as they were in position, forcing the Panthers into handling errors and breaking up the momentum of any attacking play.
